Blade & Sorcery: Nomad

Preparing for Starfield

Starfield, the first game in a brand new series from Bethesda Game Studios, is coming to PC and Xbox in November and while that may seem to be a long way off yet, we're already excitedly preparing for the release.

Update 12 May 2022: Bethesda has announced on Twitter that Starfield has been delayed until the first half of 2023.

If you haven't heard about it yet, Starfield is going to be the debut entry in an entirely new franchise and marks the first single-player RPG released by BGS since Fallout 4 all the way back in 2015. The details of the new game world and story have not been fully revealed yet and we've been eagerly following the "Into The Starfield" video series as it teases more and more information about the upcoming title.

What we do know is Starfield will be using an updated version of the Creation Engine which has been used to power Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 (which is in itself an evolution of the Gamebyro Engine used by older titles). Todd Howard has also confirmed in an AMA on Reddit that Starfield will have full mod support, which is great news for our community!

So what are we doing to prepare for Starfield? Glad you asked! We're slowly ramping up our efforts to create a community space for Starfield. This is comprised of a few parts:

  • Starfield Modding Discord - We could have simply added Starfield channels to our main server, but this time around we felt it would be far better to separate the Starfield discussion into its own server. There are already some interesting conversations happening there, including early planning of a Community Patch for the game. If you're interested in modding Starfield, please do check it out.
  • Starfield Modding Forums - We've created a new forum category where you can talk about the game, modding or even share your ideas for mods.
  • Starfield Modding Wiki - While it's pretty barebones right now, we plan to use the Modding.wiki site for Starfield to serve as a hub for important information about modding which would otherwise be lost to obscurity in forum posts, Discord servers or Reddit threads.
  • Starfield Game Section - Coming November 2022. We'll be opening the doors on the site section to share your mods, images, videos and collections for Starfield.

That's not all, we're also actively engaging with our friends at Bethesda to learn more about the game and get more modding-specific information that we can share with mods authors, tool developers and the community to allow us to work together to create a modding community that could rival the ones for their previous games.

Are you as excited as we are for Starfield? What kinds of mods would you like to see? Join the discussion on the forums.

Don't forget to wishlist Starfield on Steam or join Constellation on Bethesda's website to stay updated.

ill wait a few weeks till after the game has been out a while and read alot of reviews before i decide to buy or not...i saw the showcase and looks pretty dated ...it looks just like fallout 4 with diff lighting fx..it seems they even re-used fallout assests for most of the static meshes.

Does anyone know if Nvidia's new modding tool RTX Remix will work with Starfield? God it's killing me!

Will never understand why people who don't like Bethesda continue to expel this much effort complaining  about something they make clear they don't want and thus won't get.  I swear some of these people act like that by law they'll be forced to purchase and consume the game.

Anywho, loved Skyrim, loved FO4, will probably love this.  Hell I still enjoy firing up those old titles every once in awhile.  Will be getting Starfield at or shortly after launch outside of any unforeseen events.

                    +1

BGS games are very special. There is NOTHING else out there quite like them. If people have so much of an issue with them, their engine or whatever it is they have an issue with, there's great news. There are thousands of other games that they might prefer to play instead. Me? I like how ambitious BGS games are and I like the amount of value I get from them. Sure they're not perfect, not even close, but I still spend more time in these worlds than most others and I wouldn't want BGS games to be any other way (although I wouldn't say no to some optimizations and bug fixes XD)

                        It's called healthy skepticism.
Al it's called critical thinking, it wise not to suck dev c-ck and throw your money at corporations when they are subjected to greed.
Have we forgotten about maid mods, the oblivion horse scandal and oh yeah  FALLOUT 76 already?

When one buys a game, we expect the game to be that of what we see in a trailer, relatively bug free and whatever other content is seen in said trailer.
If the product is anything other than how it was advertised, do you know what that's called?  A SCAM!

I'm not saying this is the case for starfield. We will see on release.

BGS games always look bad, but once you play you can't stop.

$60.00 Initial investment - 100+hrs gameplay on Vanilla. 500+hrs modding and playing modded games, $20.00 Anniversary Edition upgrade, currently a stable and enjoyable 800 even mods with 663 plugins, playing the game for the umpteenth time.

Literally pennies on the hour for gameplay and the learning and enjoyment of modding the game where (all due respect and mega thanks to the modders), I can alter the game and play it in a myriad of varieties all for free (although I subscribe to Nexus, it is not mandatory).

And still people complain that the game had some issues at launch and people at Bethesda should be drawn and quartered, even though they have given the community a product that has modding capabilities far beyond those of any other major gaming title hands down.

Thanks Bethesda for delivering games with an initial story, albeit with some issues (since they do not have unlimited time and resources vs return on investment), and for allowing us access to modding tools and the encouragement to change the game into a version anyone with the time and dedication to make it their own version.

                                    @HAWUGAO

I have never played a bad looking BGS game. Well maybe if you count F76 with that horrible shine on everything but I'd hardly call that bad looking, just worse than most of the others.

These games offer scale that no other games really do, and at the times of their releases they can look pretty damn good. Sure, they don't look cutting edge compared to some linear games that come around at the same time, but I don't agree with the idea that anything that doesn't look cutting edge looks bad. Games have looked good since the days of PS3 and X360, since then, generations have been very iterative. You can boot up some games from that generation running at 4k with HDR and they look almost on par with current gen games outside of a few new effects.

Not trying to sound rude, but maybe you are looking at games the wrong way.

You are funny.. skyrim you play now is not skyrim that was released. Why ppl play bethesda games is because some people are gifted at making insanely awesome mods.. and modlists and making everything together work nicely. It has NOTHING to do with bethesda.

Yup, newer get that "it's just Fallout 4 / Skyrim in space, meeehhh"  Seriously, that's not meh, that's NOICE :D. Fallout 4 main quest line wasn't that good and DLC was, well it depends on the player, personally, I liked DLC stories.

But point is that F4 is still played as a game and Skyrim is definitely very popular. Steam charts are simply facts.
Even older Bethesda games are still played :D especially non-Bethesda New Vegas and again DLC quest was really solid.
I do hope its gonna be Skyrim / Bethesda Fallout in space, and thus DLC gonna be OK as well, maybe even beater ... and modders gonna beat crap of Starfield

1880 hours in LE. 1603 hours in SE. I bought the original game, plus each of the DLC when they released. I'm at fractions of a cent per hour played at this point. And I'm still playing.

From what I have seen, the "hate" that you take it as, is not from people who don't like Skyrim or Fallout or BGS as a whole, but people that feel like the studio is drifting away and losing its magical formula. To brush criticism and scepticism off as hate is incredibly dangerous and will often, in the end, just lead to the demise of the thing one seeks to protect.

I love Skyrim and have a deep understanding of how and why that game works so well as a game on its own and as an environment for modders to play with. Same goes for the fallout games.

I love BGS previous work which is WHY I criticise them and why I am sceptical for their upcoming release. I did not like the direction they took Fallout 4 with voice protagonist, way less interesting quests, very flat dialogue, "streamlining" of the perk & skill system.

It was an interesting world and it had some great improvements, especially to the weapon customization (even though it was unbalanced), as well as the base building component (even though it was buggy and unfinished). It was all great fun, but it was clear that the direction they seem to be going was not a good one. In my opinion of course.

So again, don't confuse criticism and scepticism with hatred.

                                                                                BOOM! best of both worlds.

Adding more dialogue options will make the VA do more work so the cheaper way for more dialogue options is silent. It would be nice to hear how our player sounds like but yeah sadly it won't work out if it means to add in more dialogue

It is a bad idea, from a mod authors perspective its horrible.

When you choose to make your protagonist voiced, you immediately restrict creativity for your quest creators.
You now have to record the voice lines for the NPC's related to the quests as well as the protagonist, male and female voice.

This makes it so that you might have a quest take almost 3 times as much work for the recording of voice lines as well as restricting the creativity of the author. No longer can the writer simply write dialogue that can be chosen depending on a variety of things such as certain quests being done before it, "high or low" karma, wearing of certain gear, etc.

Now you have to voice all of these options making the work indefinitely harder.
(This is my #1 criticism of Fallout 4 and why I think many of it's quests fell flat.)

It is also incredibly bad from a roleplaying perspective, because a voiced line from your own character is rarely done in the way you expect the voiced line to be done. Now I have no problems with series games from The Witcher series or Mass Effect but those characters are mostly set and written. Player created characters are not, they are blank and created so that the player writes their story. This is what I think is one of the unique things about BGS games.

From a mod authors perspective, like I said, it's horrible. Making towns and small areas in Skyrim is fairly easy as a small mod author because you can simply copy and paste existing general dialogue and write your own dialogue for the player. You can make very complex quests using a very limited amount of voice dialogue, as long as the written dialogue from the player is unique it all connects and fits well.
This has been done a ton and is a proven concept. Something like this doesn't work and can't really be done as soon as you have a voiced protagonist.

I very much hope that the character is unvoiced in Starfield for these and a few other reasons.

Hear me out: bugthesda is gonna make a game that uses procedural generation to allow "countless" possibilities? The last time they did that was freaking Daggerfall. And while Daggerfall wasnt half bad its still a very large leap compared to their current goals.

May I remind you, drama aside and corporate bs aside, Fallout 76 is an example of Bethesda stepping out of their comfort zone...Turns out when they do that there is an infestation of bugs.

And may I FURTHER remind you that the BEST we got in terms of a promise like that was No Man's Sky and, bless their commitment to the game, it still has very samey planets?  Yet we think the Emperor of Bugs can do better? Really, guys? Im not tryna be a dick, truly. I just think some people are forgetting key context is all. Hey, I blindly loved their crap too. I even wanted a multiplayer Fallout. But we gotta be realistic

If ya truly love something then dont fear punishing it. Bethy-boy needs a wake up call. I hate to say this but if you buy this game BEFORE reviews at the very least you deserve how bad its going to be. At some point ya gotta start blaming the consumer.

Instead we will have very dense main planets to explore, with 1000 procedurally planets to mess around with in the background if we would like to. It is not a no mans sky experience where the main draw is to explore a ton of procedurally generated planets, they are supplementary.

It doesn't matter what the reasoning is behind doing something if the end result is bad. So what if the 1000 "supplementary" planets are there for us to mess around with, if them being there diminishes the game as a whole. Sorry, but I completely disagree with your take on this.

First, perhaps it's just me but it looks a lot like "The Outer Worlds" by Obsidian released a few years back. I'm a huge fan of that game. Obsidian have a very special place for me. I fear that this is little too similar to said game and that I will be comparing it while playing. From the trailer, the game looks excellent...perhaps a little too fallout-esque  but perhaps that's what they were going for.

However, I do admire Beth's innovation and their ambitions of trying to do things different and pushing the technology to what is possible to get the best experience for their fans. This game does look highly ambitious and does show the potential of the in house "Creation Engine 2", no matter how archaic  it is compared to that or UE5 or Unity. I'm sure there will be some excellent mods from the community here on the Nexus and I very much look forward to seeing what authors have got in store.

For me, a Bethesda game isn't a Bethesda game unless it is seasoned with mods from the Nexus.
