Preparing for Starfield

Starfield, the first game in a brand new series from Bethesda Game Studios, is coming to PC and Xbox in November and while that may seem to be a long way off yet, we're already excitedly preparing for the release.

Update 12 May 2022: Bethesda has announced on Twitter that Starfield has been delayed until the first half of 2023.

If you haven't heard about it yet, Starfield is going to be the debut entry in an entirely new franchise and marks the first single-player RPG released by BGS since Fallout 4 all the way back in 2015. The details of the new game world and story have not been fully revealed yet and we've been eagerly following the "Into The Starfield" video series as it teases more and more information about the upcoming title.

What we do know is Starfield will be using an updated version of the Creation Engine which has been used to power Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 (which is in itself an evolution of the Gamebyro Engine used by older titles). Todd Howard has also confirmed in an AMA on Reddit that Starfield will have full mod support, which is great news for our community!

So what are we doing to prepare for Starfield? Glad you asked! We're slowly ramping up our efforts to create a community space for Starfield. This is comprised of a few parts:

  • Starfield Modding Discord - We could have simply added Starfield channels to our main server, but this time around we felt it would be far better to separate the Starfield discussion into its own server. There are already some interesting conversations happening there, including early planning of a Community Patch for the game. If you're interested in modding Starfield, please do check it out.
  • Starfield Modding Forums - We've created a new forum category where you can talk about the game, modding or even share your ideas for mods.
  • Starfield Modding Wiki - While it's pretty barebones right now, we plan to use the Modding.wiki site for Starfield to serve as a hub for important information about modding which would otherwise be lost to obscurity in forum posts, Discord servers or Reddit threads.
  • Starfield Game Section - Coming November 2022. We'll be opening the doors on the site section to share your mods, images, videos and collections for Starfield.

That's not all, we're also actively engaging with our friends at Bethesda to learn more about the game and get more modding-specific information that we can share with mods authors, tool developers and the community to allow us to work together to create a modding community that could rival the ones for their previous games.

Are you as excited as we are for Starfield? What kinds of mods would you like to see? Join the discussion on the forums.

Don't forget to wishlist Starfield on Steam or join Constellation on Bethesda's website to stay updated.

Does anyone know if it will be on GOG? If it isn't, I think I'm going to pass.

For me Nexus Mods IS the modding community. I know it's far from the only source for mods nowadays, but my experience with modding my Oblivion and making a couple of primitive mods for it was my intro into modding.

Thank you guys, can't wait for Starfield and related mod content!

If it is true that Starfield content 1.000 planets I suspect that it is not a coincidence. 1.000 planets cannot be realistically filled with game content and Bethesda is simply expecting that you, modders, will fill this astronomical gap. 1.000 planets and probably more than 10 years of modding ahead.

                          We will see.

What it will probably be like optimistically is Daggerfall. The map was the size of the UK but the dungeons were random. So long as exploring a barren world isn't part of the core gameplay loop it could be good.

Well, some would be gas giants, cool looking, if you like shades of watercolor in milk kinda thing ... probably can harvest resources or get some science data or not ...  but NO LANDING ... unless you are Jebediah Kerman.

Some would be basically dead rocks, still really cool but it can be generated like NMS, you like this particular completely random all lookalike dead rock? Sure, build a base there why not it's your space adventure :D. Some would have some sort of hodge-podge atmo, mostly just fog or sort of color, random, unbreathable of us Oxy Carbon guys. Same you like then its your favorite one, go for it. Also, some cold is and should be covered in some sort of frozen ... something.
Just look at Marwell of the Solar system... seriously "you woldnt have much fun at Venus".

And some would have life, and BANG now the fun starts, partially random generated and some touch by artist, and if there is a quest there ... well it simply needs a lot of "touch".

Sadly in reality majority of planets are like that, NMS actually has a ridiculous amount of life-suporting planets.

Personally, I really hope for some LV-426 experiences, although Bethesda isn't really good in dread or horror quests.

I'm waiting for The Wayward Realms. I'll pass this game. Nothing new. No innovation. Bland story, with no depth for the characters. And bugs. Don't forget the bugs. It's a feature you know.

Lying Todd Howard will get no more money from me. Mod authors here will though. Because they actually care.

Will never understand why people who don't like Bethesda continue to expel this much effort complaining  about something they make clear they don't want and thus won't get.  I swear some of these people act like that by law they'll be forced to purchase and consume the game.

Anywho, loved Skyrim, loved FO4, will probably love this.  Hell I still enjoy firing up those old titles every once in awhile.  Will be getting Starfield at or shortly after launch outside of any unforeseen events.

                                                    +1

BGS games are very special. There is NOTHING else out there quite like them. If people have so much of an issue with them, their engine or whatever it is they have an issue with, there's great news. There are thousands of other games that they might prefer to play instead. Me? I like how ambitious BGS games are and I like the amount of value I get from them. Sure they're not perfect, not even close, but I still spend more time in these worlds than most others and I wouldn't want BGS games to be any other way (although I wouldn't say no to some optimizations and bug fixes XD)

                                                        It's called healthy skepticism.
Al it's called critical thinking, it wise not to suck dev c-ck and throw your money at corporations when they are subjected to greed.
Have we forgotten about maid mods, the oblivion horse scandal and oh yeah  FALLOUT 76 already?

When one buys a game, we expect the game to be that of what we see in a trailer, relatively bug free and whatever other content is seen in said trailer.
If the product is anything other than how it was advertised, do you know what that's called?  A SCAM!

I'm not saying this is the case for starfield. We will see on release.

$60.00 Initial investment - 100+hrs gameplay on Vanilla. 500+hrs modding and playing modded games, $20.00 Anniversary Edition upgrade, currently a stable and enjoyable 800 even mods with 663 plugins, playing the game for the umpteenth time.

Literally pennies on the hour for gameplay and the learning and enjoyment of modding the game where (all due respect and mega thanks to the modders), I can alter the game and play it in a myriad of varieties all for free (although I subscribe to Nexus, it is not mandatory).

And still people complain that the game had some issues at launch and people at Bethesda should be drawn and quartered, even though they have given the community a product that has modding capabilities far beyond those of any other major gaming title hands down.

Thanks Bethesda for delivering games with an initial story, albeit with some issues (since they do not have unlimited time and resources vs return on investment), and for allowing us access to modding tools and the encouragement to change the game into a version anyone with the time and dedication to make it their own version.

I have never played a bad looking BGS game. Well maybe if you count F76 with that horrible shine on everything but I'd hardly call that bad looking, just worse than most of the others.

These games offer scale that no other games really do, and at the times of their releases they can look pretty damn good. Sure, they don't look cutting edge compared to some linear games that come around at the same time, but I don't agree with the idea that anything that doesn't look cutting edge looks bad. Games have looked good since the days of PS3 and X360, since then, generations have been very iterative. You can boot up some games from that generation running at 4k with HDR and they look almost on par with current gen games outside of a few new effects.

Not trying to sound rude, but maybe you are looking at games the wrong way.

Yup, newer get that "it's just Fallout 4 / Skyrim in space, meeehhh"  Seriously, that's not meh, that's NOICE :D. Fallout 4 main quest line wasn't that good and DLC was, well it depends on the player, personally, I liked DLC stories.

But point is that F4 is still played as a game and Skyrim is definitely very popular. Steam charts are simply facts.
Even older Bethesda games are still played :D especially non-Bethesda New Vegas and again DLC quest was really solid.
I do hope its gonna be Skyrim / Bethesda Fallout in space, and thus DLC gonna be OK as well, maybe even beater ... and modders gonna beat crap of Starfield

Good lord, there is perhaps less than 1% total world population who care about non human races that are not women or male. Its as bad as lootboxes and mtx and diablo immortal. Just another agenda pushed in order to divide and exploit.

But if the game will be as good as it should then i will play - but no preorder - this might be fallout76 or ME andromeda..

Sure, modders kept them alive long past their normal lifespan, and improved things immensely along the way, but they were built upon solid games first and foremost.

There's no indication that Starfield will be any different from the others in that respect, a decent game out of the box.
